Who we are

The aid for secular refugees supports non-religious or religiously distanced refugees in Switzerland and people who are persecuted because of their distance from or criticism of religion. We are guided by the principles of secular humanism and are committed to the respect of universal human rights. The aid for secular refugees is a working group of the Swiss Freethinkers' Association and is supported financially and logistically by it.

Our positions

The freedom to live a religious or non-religious life is an important foundation of pluralistic societies. People who live according to enlightened and humanistic values and are threatened for this in their home countries or by religious groups deserve our respect and our support - both in their home country and when they have to find a new home because of these dangers.

Refugees who seek asylum in Switzerland or have been granted the right to stay have the right to physical and mental integrity, just like any other person. This protection must also be granted in refugee accommodations. The operators of accommodations and the competent authorities must quickly recognise threats to residents because of their ideological or sexual orientation and take decisive action to counter them. Persons uttering such threats need to be separated. Only in exceptional cases should the threatened persons be transferred to other accommodation. However, such security measures need to be taken if necessary.

Apostasy must be recognised as a reason for asylum, both in cases of persecution by the state or religious groups, and in cases of persecution by family members or other private individuals in the home country.
